Yanks Seven Game Winning Streak Snapped

BRONX, NEW YORK, JUNE10- Wednesday afternoon’s interleague game between the Yankees and the Washington Nationals was a hard fought contest that ended in Washington’s favor, 5-4, after 11 innings.
The contest was a pitchers’ duel while starters GioGonzalez and Nathan Eovaldi were pitching, unlike the previous contest in which both started on May 19. Gonzalez gave up six earned runs in five innings and Eovasldi surrendered five earned runs in 4.1 innings.
On Wednesday, Brendan Ryan singled with one out in the third to register the first Yankee hit. It was his first at bat of the 2015 season as he earlier in the day removed from the 60 day disabled list to make the start at shortstop. The second hit off Gonzalez was a single by Mark Teixeira in the sixth. The hit total off Gonzalez doubled to four in the seventh. Chris Young singled and was driven in by a triple by Jose Pirela. {After the game, Pirela was sent to the Yankees AAA team in Pennsylvania.[After Gonzalez was lifted, a single by Brett Gardner tied the score at two. Gardner later in the inning scored on Alex Rodriguez’s 1,998thcareer RBI, a double over centerfielder Denard Span’s head. When the frame ended, four Yankee runs scored.
The first run off Eovaldi came with two out in the third on consecutive doubles by Danny Esposito and Span. The second run was scored with two out in the fifth on a first pitch solo home run by Esposito. The Yankee starter was replaced by rookie Jacob Lindgren in the eighth. The rookie gave up a two out, two run homer to another rookie Michael Taylor, which knotted the score at four. Matt Williams, the manager of Washington commented, “He’s got [power to all fields. We brought him in for defense and he made the big swing.”
The game finally concluded in the 11th. The Nats built a run on effective “small ball”. Tyler more opened the frame with a single and moved to third after two infield outs. Moore scored on an infield single by Span, his third hit of the game.
The Washington Nationals skipper remarked after the game, “We battled till the last out.”
